Refeed Circular
Nutrient system

Recover of Food Waste and Soil Enrichment
Canada

Play Video

ReFeed farm in British Columbia, Canada, has a proven method to enrich soil and recover 100% of food waste using circular design. ReFeed is an established and attested example of a farm successfully using circular economy to recover 100% of food waste from a nutrient value perspective.

They also have a regenerative business vision with the purpose of helping farmers improve soil.

It is a scale up project with climate, social and environmental benefits increasing by 200%-800% into 2025 compared to 2021.

Challenge

Every year, 2.5 billion tons of food are wasted. That is about 1/3 of the total food produced. The US has calculated that CO2 emissions from food waste hits 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, without even calculating landfill emission.

Without the participation of ReFeed, 4100 tons of food would have been lost in 2021, with a value in excess of CAD$ 23 mio. The climate loss would have been 83.525 tons CO2e from direct landfill emissions.

Solution—Results

The circular system gives multiple value streams effects, such as:

— Direct recovery of food waste to people– adding social and nutrient value to people; In 2021 407,651 meals was provided.

— Avoidance of all food waste to landfill- avoiding the climate and environmental effects of landfill disposal; In 2021 83,933 tons of CO2e emissions was saved.

— Substitution of virgin production of cow feed to cows, by direct recovery of food waste to animals- adding nutrient value to cows and economic value to farmers; 18 mio m3 of water saved.

— Conversion to higher value with the processing of manure and food waste to soil and microbial products that have regenerative capacity- adding:

  • nutrient value to plants,
  • value to climate by CO2 sequestration,
  • increased yield value that creates economic value to farmers,
  • environmental value, such as cleaner soil and water environment;

— Substitution of synthetic fertilizer and pesticides as regenerative products give economic value to the farmers, as well as to the environment and climate.
